The only existing national plan regarding waste management is 'that of the PN'

The Nationalist party said that the only existing national plan with regards to waste management is that of the PN.

In a statement, the Nationalist Party has welcomed the publication of Legal Notices 221 and 222 of 2023, which will allow Local Councils to request information about properties which are rented for holidaymakers.

“This is the second proposal put forward by the Nationalist Party that government has adopted, following government's commitment to creating a coordination system between Local Councils and apartment administrators. However, this proposal has not been implemented yet,” the PN said.

It continued that although these are positive steps in the right direction, there is still much to be done in the waste management and health sector, which should involve local councils.

The PN said that in the interest of finding a national solution to the issue of waste management and garbage collection in our country, it is recalling some of the proposals published in the document "True Local Government" in December of last year.

These included the proposal for local councils to regain responsibility for waste collection, increasing the frequency of waste collection, establishing a coordination system between local councils and block administrators and identifying environmental crime hotspots, thus increasing enforcement.

“The fact that government is now following the PN’s steps and proposals demonstrates that the only national plan in existence for the waste management and collection sector is that of the Nationalist Party,” it said.

The PN urged government to implement the proposals mentioned, together with all the proposals in the "True Local Government" document, so that the problems are addressed as efficiently as possible for the benefit of localities.

“All of this raises the question of why no representative of the Labour Government attended the debate on the waste issue on 4 September, 2023 on the national broadcasting station.

The PN’s statement was signed by the PN’s spokesperson for local government Darren Carabott and President of the PN’s College of Local Councillors (KKLPN) Charles Bonello.
