The PN's local councillors in Mosta have called for an urgent council meeting over the uprooting of the ficus trees in the locality's main square.
In a statement, the PN said that its local councillors in Mosta filed the request with the mayor and Executive Secretary of the council, adding that it is now up to the mayor to accept or refuse.
This comes after activists have been protesting to halt the process of uprooting the existing Ficus trees, which had their branches cut off on Monday.
In a Facebook video, Grech said that he gave instructions to the councillors to file the request. "We remain in favour of the environment and the importance of trees which are not only an essential part of the environment, but also for people's health."
Grech said he expects the mayor to now accept this request so that a discussion will take place so that the best decision will be taken, as it is not acceptable to have the destruction of trees that at the end of the day are important for the environment.
