As we welcome the New Year, it’s customary for us to make resolutions for self-improvement and a more fulfilling life. But why confine our resolutions to just personal goals? As Gozo residents, it is our duty to make resolutions for the betterment of our cherished island. In 2024, let’s strive towards these new year’s resolutions for Gozo, from improving our roads to safeguarding the environment.

Better roads and parking in Victoria

Most roads in Gozo, especially in Victoria, are in a terrible state. These roads need resurfacing urgently. Drivers would really appreciate the improvement. The expense of these works won’t be significant, but the difference will be noticeable. 

Chaotic traffic plagues the main road, ‘Giorgio Borg Olivier’ leading to the bus terminus during mornings in both directions. People on foot are continuously at risk hurrying to finish their daily chores. Transport Malta has disregarded several pleas for a pedestrian crossing. Minor accidents occur nearly every day, and a serious fatality is on the horizon. Let’s act now, before it’s too late. 

The parking facilities near the bus terminus are insufficient for daily demand. A temporary solution could ease drivers from unwarranted fines and frustration. Why don’t we reserve around ten parking slots for a time limit of twenty minutes? Instead of searching for parking or parking wrongly, this provides a solution for drivers to meet their needs while keeping traffic moving smoothly. The presence of traffic wardens ensures proper system functionality. 

Promote sustainable tourism

In the past, Gozo had breathtaking beaches, but now they are not as remarkable. Developers’ greed has negatively affected Xlendi and Marsalforn, with the blessing of the Planning Authority. Despite the clear blue waters, the rampant construction of concrete structures detracts from the beauty of the landscapes. The island’s tourism sector is booming, which is not surprising. Yet, the rise in tourists requires a concentration on sustainability. We, as residents, have a duty to promote and support sustainable tourism practices. This can involve staying in eco-friendly accommodations, using reformed public transportation, and minimising our carbon footprint.

Preserve our environment

In the past, Gozo had more natural beauty, but now it’s important to protect what remains for future generations. We should resolve to maintain cleanliness in our beaches, coastal areas, and countryside. To achieve this, we can increase our participation in beach cleanups, properly dispose of waste, and reduce our use of single-use plastics. Supporting initiatives for environmental conservation and raising awareness of protecting our environment is important.

Support local businesses

The pandemic hit hard local businesses who are now recovering. So it’s crucial to support them now more than ever. The government should avoid draining the private sector of skilled local employees and using taxpayers’ money to gain votes. When we support local shops and businesses, we boost the local economy and foster community spirit. We should make it a resolution to prioritise locally sourced products and support small businesses on the island.

Embrace Gozitan culture

Gozo is overflowing with history, culture, and traditions, making it the perfect place to explore during the new year. We should try going to local festivals and activities, inspiring our youth to learn about traditional crafts, and backing local artists and artisans. When we embrace the Gozitan culture, we support our heritage and enrich our knowledge and experiences.

Volunteer in the community

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back and make a positive difference. Taking part in local feasts,organising events and help set up street decorations makes a huge difference. Gozo offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, including organising socio-cultural events and taking part in community clean-up efforts. Volunteering allows us to enhance our community, acquire new skills, and establish meaningful relationships.

Our daily routines often make us overlook the beauty of our surroundings. Let’s commit to exploring Gozo and uncovering hidden gems. Trying Gozo’s scenic pathways ensures you’ll always stumble upon something new to discover. Let’s become tourists in our own home and appreciate all that Gozo offers, preserving it for future generations.

Support sustainable agriculture

Gozo’s ideal combination of fertile fields, and Mediterranean climate makes it ideal for agriculture. Previous generations got relief for their large families through hard work in these fields. We can support the remaining farming community by purchasing their local and seasonal produce. This not only reduces our carbon footprint but also helps enhance the economic situation of local farmers. By choosing organic and sustainable agricultural practices, we can promote a healthier and more sustainable food system on Gozo.

Reduce water consumption

We have a responsibility to use water wisely, since it is a precious resource. These obligations are even more applicable to developers using a concrete batching plant that relies on a depleting water table. The Water Services Section should promote additional water conservation efforts, prompt attention to leak repairs, use of water-saving devices, and mindful water consumption. Saving water not only cuts costs but also helps preserve the island’s water resources that are running low.

Encourage responsible pet ownership

Many households in Gozo now view pets as members of the family, highlighting the importance of responsible ownership. We should refrain from giving pets as presents to our young children, only to discard these pets later. As responsible pet owners, we should commit to getting our pets registered and neutered, which will help control the stray animal population and preventing havoc in the streets of certain villages. It’s important to vaccinate our pets regularly and have good behavior in public spaces for a safe environment.

Spread kindness and positivity

Finally, one more resolution is to promote kindness and positivity in our community. A kind word, a helping hand, or an act of generosity can make someone’s day much brighter. By being positive and supportive of our fellow Gozitans, foreign residents and visitors, let’s create a caring and strengthened community.

As the new year begins, let’s concentrate on personal resolutions towards improving Gozo for everyone, particularly our younger generation. These resolutions can help us create a happier, healthier, and more thriving community in Gozo.
