As we stand on the cusp of a new year, it's only fitting to reflect on the changes we hope to see in Malta in 2024. While we can be thankful for a good 2023, there are still a number of key areas that deserve our attention and for which I am hopeful for improvement for a brighter future.

First and foremost, let's talk about the perennial issue of traffic management. Navigating the streets of Malta, particularly during peak hours, has never been more of a daunting task. I shan’t waste time arguing about the frustration, implications for the environment and the overall quality of life, brought about by traffic. I wish for 2024 to be the year in which we will perform the needed quality leap for a comprehensive and sustainable traffic management plan that eases the burden on our roads, promotes public transportation, and embraces innovative solutions to alleviate the congestion on our roads.

In the coming year, I hope for a more conscientious approach to development, with a stringent review process for permits on ODZ land. Striking a balance between progress and environmental conservation is paramount, and authorities should ensure that any construction respects the delicate ecosystems and scenic landscapes that make Malta unique.

With the MEP and Local Council elections coming up, in 2024 I aspire for more honest and well-meaning politicians to join the political fray. This is not just a wish but a fundamental necessity for any self-respecting democracy which let’s face it, has taken one too many blows in recent years. In 2024, let us hope for leaders who prioritize transparency, accountability, and the common good over personal interests. A political landscape built on trust and integrity is essential for fostering a sense of unity and pride.

And since we’re on the subject or Local Council elections, it's an opportune moment to ensure that these immensely side-lined instruments are given the right powers to truly carry out their full potential. In the coming year, let us advocate for empowering local councils to play a more significant role in decision-making. Strengthening the voice of local communities ensures that policies and projects align with the specific needs and aspirations of different regions in Malta. It's time to foster a sense of ownership and pride at the local level, allowing communities to actively participate in shaping their own destinies.

The environment is facing unprecedented challenges globally, and Malta is not immune to these threats. Our commitment to sustainability must be reinforced in 2024, with concrete actions to protect our air, water, and land. Embracing renewable energy, promoting waste reduction, and preserving green spaces are crucial steps towards a greener Malta that goes beyond the odd green-washing project. The green credentials of this government are still a far cry from what are needed to be, and I am hopeful that 2024 will see the right change in direction.
