Transport Malta issued over 32,000 contraventions, confiscated 570 vehicles in 2023

Transport Malta said that it issued over 32,000 contraventions and confiscated 570 vehicles as part of its enforcement work throughout 2023.

In a statement, Transport Malta said that it had ramped up its road enforcement efforts in 2023, as it relentlessly worked towards ensuring safer roads and upholding traffic regulations, continuing that the Authority’s commitment to maintaining order on the roads is evident in the “remarkable statistics” achieved throughout the year.

During 2023, the authority said that it issued a total of 32,801 contraventions, sending a strong message against violations of traffic laws. “Approximately 6,000 administrative fines were imposed on offenders, underlining the Authority's dedication to holding accountable those who compromise road safety,” Transport Malta.

In an effort to combat illegal and dangerous practices, the Authority confiscated a substantial number of vehicles, including 570 cars, 376 escooters, and 115 number plates. These actions serve as a deterrent and reinforce the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, it said.

“Collaboration was key to the Authority’s success, as a number of roadside inspections were conducted, some conducted in collaboration with the Malta Police Force, Department for Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER), and the European Labour Authority (ELA). This cooperative approach allowed for a comprehensive examination of road users' compliance with regulations and further strengthened the impact of enforcement efforts,” Transport Malta said.

The authority said that a notable proactive initiative was taken before the commencement of the scholastic year. The aim was to ensure smooth traffic flow and to offer support to motorists facing breakdowns on the roads. Transport Malta provided a free tow-truck service, showcasing the Authority's commitment to both preventive measures and rapid response to unforeseen incidents.
