Roma sack Jose Mourinho

Italian sleeping giants Roma have sacked Jose Mourinho as the capital team languish in 9th place in Serie A.

Mourinho was appointed as Roma’s sixtieth manager in May 2021 and led the team to winning the UEFA Conference League in 2022 and to the UEFA Europa League final the following season, where the lost in a penalty shootout.

But the club has fallen on harder times this season, with Roma languishing in 9th place, four points off the European qualification spots.

Mourinho’s team only registered one win in the last five league matches against fellow strugglers Napoli, with losses against Juventus, Milan and high-flying Bologna  - who are all above them in the table – in that period.

The club was also knocked out of the Coppa Italia last week after falling to a 1-0 loss against bitter city rivals Lazio, although they remain in the UEFA Europa League, having qualified for the Round of 16 where they will face Feyenoord.

“We thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for the passion and commitment he has shown since his arrival in the Giallorossi,” Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said in a club statement.

“We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the Club, immediate change is necessary.

“We wish José and his collaborators the best for the future.”

The club said that further updates regarding the new coaching staff will be communicated shortly.
