There are a total of 690 inmates currently being held at the Corradino Correctional Facility, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said on Wednesday.
Replying to a parliamentary question asked by PN MP Darren Carabott, the minister said that 387 inmates have been given a prison sentence whilst the remaining 303 inmates are being held under arrest.
Last May, data from Eurostat showed how in 2021 Malta boasted the European Union's least overcrowded prisons, with a prison occupancy rate of approximately 65% of its total capacity.
The statistics revealed that Malta's prison overcrowding is the lowest in the EU, closely followed by Estonia and Latvia, both registering a prison occupancy rate of 66% of the total available space.
In February 2023 there were 589 prisoners being held at Corradino, with 279 of those being foreigners.
In a separate question by the same MP, Camilleri informed Parliament that there were 399 persons who were issued with a probation order, 37 were given a parole license and 9 persons are having a parole report compiled.
