Malta signs convention on prosecuting war crimes and genocide

Malta has signed a convention aimed at improving international cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of international crimes including genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The Ljubljana - The Hague Convention was signed by Justice Minister Jonathan Attard at The Hague, the Maltese government said.

While the convention fully respects the sovreignty of member states and legislative instruments that already exists, it deals with important themes, particularly when it comes to international crimes, while also emphasising the importance of investigations and prosecutions int he aforementioned crimes, the government said.

"This convention marks a very important step in obtaining justice for victims of these crimes," Minister Attard said.

The Convention will make it easier for countries to cooperate in searches, extraditions and prosecutions of people accused with such crimes. 

The convention came to be on the initiative of Argentina, Belgium, Mongolia, The Netherlands, Senegal and Slovenia. 34 nations have signed it.
