This year's Girls in ICT Day is centred around the Leadership theme, emphasising the importance of strong female role models in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) careers. While women now make up over 40% of high-skill occupations globally, their presence in ICT-related fields remains disproportionately low.

Critical sectors like software development, engineering, technology research, academia and high-level policymaking still need more adequate representation of women. Women often leave science and technology roles at higher rates than men.

The leadership gender gap is particularly evident in Stem and Steam fields, where women in ICT find themselves in junior or support roles, facing challenges in career advancement. Executive positions, entrepreneurship in ICT and roles in science and technology policymaking also see a lower representation of women.

To thrive in Stem and Steam, girls and young women need exposure to female leaders who can inspire them and break down barriers. The Girls in ICT Day 2024 theme aims to tackle these challenges, fostering empowerment and leadership development for a more equitable future in Stem and Steam.

This year, International Girls in ICT Day, celebrated on 25 April, provides an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes and encourage girls' participation in ICT, Stem and Steam. Through targeted initiatives and mentorship programmes, we can collectively create an inclusive environment that empowers the next generation of female technology leaders.
