New President: Programme of Spiteri Debono's swearing-in ceremony announced

After being unanimously approved by Parliament to be the next President of the Republic of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono will be officially sworn into her new role on Thursday, 4 April.

The government announced the programme of the swearing-in ceremony.

This ceremony will take place during a special Parliament session that will be held in the throne room of the President’s Palace in Valletta.

Notary Spiteri Debono is expected to take her oath of office at approximately 12:15pm; her oath will be signed by Parliament Speaker Anġlu Farrugia. After this, Spiteri Debono will make her first address as President of Malta before then greeting the general public, gathered in St. George’s Square, through the Palace’s main balcony at around 12:40pm.

Spiteri Debono, alongside Prime Minister Robert Abela and their respective spouses, will then walk down into St. George’s Square where the new President will inspect the guard of honour and be given a national salute. During the national salute, members of the Armed Forces of Malta’s air squadron will perform a flypast.

The President-Elect is expected to leave her private residence in Birkirkara at 09:15am to head for St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. A Mass will be concelebrated there by the Archbishop of Malta, Monsignor Charles J. Scicluna.

At around 11am, following the mass, Dr. Spiteri Debono will walk to the Presidential Palace from the Co-Cathedral with her husband. The general public is invited to gatherat St George’s Square to greet the President-Elect on the day of her swearing in.

The ceremony will end with the laying of wreaths at the feet of the War Monument as well as the new President’s entrance to San Anton Palace. The public and organisations are encouraged to raise the Maltese flag on the day of her oath of office as the new President of Malta.
