First Bocce Pitch inaugurated in Dingli

Saturday, 13 April 2024, 10:41 Last update: about 19 days ago

The first of its kind Bocce pitch was inaugurated in Ġnien il-Ħaddiem, Dingli, becoming the first location to have such a pitch for community use.

This followed the success of Maltese athletes and sports in general at the Special Olympics held in Malta in 2022, where the committee of Special Olympics Malta wanted to leave a lasting legacy for athletes and those wishing to enter the sports world.

The pitch was inaugurated by Inclusion Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli and President of Special Olympics Malta Lydia Abela.

“In an effort to provide athletes with a permanent training and practice structure that can also be enjoyed by the community, the committee of Special Olympics Malta has committed to building this high-level bocce pitch in Dingli,” a government statement read.

The pitch is a testament to Malta's commitment to inclusivity and athletic excellence, it said. Built to international standards, the pitch will be crucial for local athletes who already compete, as well as others who wish to start practicing this sport, to have the appropriate facilities to do so.

Farrugia Portelli praised the initiative and said that this pitch will send a strong message in favour of more inclusivity in sports.

"Through this pitch, we will be offering the opportunity for more people with disabilities and others in the village to join the sports community and also practice,” Farrugia Portelli said.

“Regardless of their sporting abilities, one will have the ability to practice in a safe environment and in accordance with high-level standards. This is a project that will benefit everyone, both athletes and the general community,” Farrugia Portelli said.

Abela said that this is not simply the inauguration of a bocce pitch, but a clear demonstration of the commitment to inclusivity, even in sports.

She thanked the Prime Minister for the support shown to Special Olympics Malta to provide athletes with the best training facilities.

She noted how in the beautiful garden in Dingli, where there is a vibrant community, the athletes of Special Olympics Malta can have a very positive experience.

Abela emphasised how these athletes are Maltese ambassadors who are succeeding beyond our shores.

Dingli Mayor Raymond Schembri said that 50 years ago, there was a vision to create this garden for families, and through the expenditure, the government is once again sending a strong message in favour of inclusion.

Present at this inauguration alongside the Mayor were also the councillors of the Dingli Local Council.
