Scheme launched to fund planting of orange and olive trees by local councils

Tuesday, 23 April 2024, 18:10 Last update: about 10 days ago

Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli launched the finance scheme called 'Ġonna fl-Urban', aiming to fund the purchasing of olive and orange trees by local councils, which will be planted in public areas.

Minister Refalo held that the launching of this scheme aims to 'continue beautifying' towns through the planting of such trees. "This initiative goes hand-in-hand with the government's work for the country to have more green areas," Refalo said.

Councils are urged to apply for this scheme by identifying zones for such trees, that would be eligible for financing of a minimum of 50 trees.

Zerafa Civelli said that citrus and olive trees live long, and that future generations will enjoy the fruits of this scheme.

Councils can apply for the scheme until 31 May.
