Summer’s madness is upon us

All we needed was for a bolt of lightning to hit a game of the euros. And it did.

In just a few days we have been inundated with strange happenings.

Such as that there was a coup attempt in Bolivia with an assault on the presidential palace which petered out after a few hours and with the ring-leaders captured.

Such as the two astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams have now been locked up in the International Space Center for the past two months, on what was planned to be an eight day trip, because of a fault that has developed.

To say nothing of what has been happening at the Euro 2024 games. Like the historic victory of Georgia over Portugal which has all the characteristics of David versus Goliath.

On the other hand, of course, both Scotland and Ukraine wended their sad way homewards. Both very brave peoples who deserved far better.

And since we are touching on politics we are now in the final week of the British general election with a Sunak-Starmer debate which left no victor on either side.

And after this opinion piece is written there is also the long-awaited debate between Biden and Trump. Do not expect anything from it except bile and hatred, unfortunately.

Nearer us the election in France is not looking good for Macron and France may well get a Eurosceptic government.

Romania and Bulgaria have again been refused joining the Eurozone because their economies are not considered good enough yet. This also means how important it is for euro member states to keep their economies flourishing. Today the countries which just a few years ago were considered problem countries, such as Greece and Spain, have reached very good growth levels as a result of the EU medicine.

Also happening after I write but before this article appears in print is the important choice of the principal leaders of the EU which will be the subject of an EU summit later today (Thursday).

Italian pro-Opposition media are claiming Giorgia Meloni has been left out of the negotiations and she is threatening taking Italy more to the Right.

Of course, none of this bothers us.

Give us coverage of the immense crowd which filled Ta’ Qali for the Ed Sheeran concert. And the many festas of the Mnarja week. And the poor rabbits preparing for their sacrifice.

Meanwhile crowds are massing at the airport and on the catamaran in a scene straight out of Krakatoa in a desperate bid to escape from the island and its heat.
