A woman died on Saturday evening when the quadbike she was riding fell off a cliff in Gharb, Gozo, the police said.

The accident took place in Triq Wied il-Mielah at 8pm.

The woman, an Italian aged 31, was on a quadbike which was being driven by an Italian man, aged 47.

The police said the driver lost control of the quadbike. He managed to jump off it to safety but the woman fell off the cliff into the sea.

The woman was later found dead in the sea. Her body was taken to Mgarr Port.

The man was taken to Gozo hospital with slight injuries.

Magistrate Brigitte Sultana is leading an inquiry.
