PM non-committal on post-election Cabinet re-shuffle possibility

Monday, 15 July 2024, 12:38 Last update: about 11 months ago

Prime Minister Robert Abela would not say whether he plans a second Cabinet reshuffle this year following the results of the local council and European Parliament elections held in June.

Asked asked whether he was considering a second reshuffle after the one he carried out in January, Abela did not give a straight answer but said that the party is undergoing changes.

Before Parliament resumes after the summer recess – the last sitting is today – the PL will be holding internal elections in the wake of developments in the past weeks. The timeline of these elections will be established during a PL administrative committee meeting.

Deputy leader for party affairs Daniel Micallef has resigned and the position of Chris Fearne as deputy leader for parliamentary affairs is in the balance as he awaits the outcome of court proceedings related to the hospitals’ deal.

Abela said that in the past month a series of meetings had been held with party delegates to analyse the outcome of the election results. Abela said that the PL won both elections, although he would have liked to see a bigger gap between the two parties.
