This week together with Arts Council Malta, we have officially launched the Screen Support Scheme, a new initiative designed to strengthen the local film industry. This scheme, which represents an investment of €1 million, will be managed directly by the Council and is the result of an extensive consultation process with key stakeholders within the sector.

The Screen Support Scheme is a testament of this Government commitment to strengthening Malta’s cultural and creative sectors. These sectors are not only vital to the country’s economic development but also play a crucial role in shaping the unique Maltese identity. The local film industry, in particular, is a cornerstone of this cultural expression, reflecting the narratives, values, and perspectives that are intrinsic to the Maltese experience. Recognizing this, we made it a priority to support the growth and sustainability of this industry.

The launch of this scheme follows a thorough consultation process with stakeholders, ensuring that the initiative is tailored to meet the specific needs of the local film community. The Council has emphasized the importance of collaboration and dialogue with industry professionals, noting that such engagement is essential to creating support mechanisms that are both effective and responsive. This consultation process has been praised for its inclusivity and for ensuring that the voices of those working in the sector were heard and considered in the design of the scheme.

The Screen Support Scheme is structured to provide comprehensive support across various stages of film production and development. It is divided into five distinct branches: Scriptwriting, Development, Short Films, Feature Film Production, and Cultural Programs. Each branch is designed to address different aspects of the film production process, from the initial stages of script development to the final production of feature-length films. This structure allows the scheme to cater to a wide range of projects, ensuring that both emerging and established filmmakers have access to the resources they need to bring their visions to life.

A key feature of the scheme is its support for new entrants to the industry. Recognizing the importance of nurturing new talent, the Council has included provisions for mentorship within the scheme. This mentorship will provide guidance and support to those who are new to the industry, helping them to navigate the challenges of film production and to develop their skills and expertise.

Applicants interested in the scheme are encouraged to submit their applications by noon on September 24th. The Council has set aside specific dates for the announcement of results, which will be made public on November 21st and 22nd. This timeline ensures that successful applicants can begin their projects with the support they need in a timely manner.

We have reiterated our commitment to continue developing and expanding this scheme in the coming years. As a Government, we recognize the importance of sustained investment in the local film industry and are dedicated to providing ongoing support to ensure its continued growth and success. By launching the Screen Support Scheme, the Council is taking a significant step towards fostering a vibrant and dynamic film industry in Malta, one that reflects the richness of Maltese culture and contributes to the country’s creative and economic landscape.

Supporting Paola Parish with restoration of the Basilica

As a Government, we have announced our commitment to assist the Basilica in Paola with the much-needed restoration of the Basilica’s bell towers and upper structure.

This initiative was unveiled in collaboration with my colleague, Byron Camilleri, and the parish priest, Fr. Marc Andre Camilleri. The project will be supported by financial aid from Komunita Malta and Arts Council.

We are set to provide a substantial investment of €400,000 for the ongoing restoration project. This funding is not only aimed at preserving the priceless heritage of this significant historical building but also at enhancing its accessibility as a tourist attraction.

One of the main features of this project will be the installation of a viewing platform, which will offer visitors a new perspective on the basilica and its surroundings.

Ensuring that all restoration work complies with the laws protecting cultural heritage is a priority. This project will be carried out with strict adherence to these regulations to safeguard the basilica’s historical value.

Additionally, discussions have taken place regarding a proposed permanent café on the roof of the basilica. It has been agreed that the café will be relocated to a fully external area on the side of the church, ensuring that the integrity of the basilica's structure is maintained.

This church is a unique landmark, distinguished by its extraordinary size and architectural significance. This restoration project is part of a broader initiative by the Government to support the preservation of Malta's religious and cultural heritage.

Over the years, numerous churches and chapels across the country have benefited from substantial government aid, ensuring their upkeep and continued use by communities.

I would like to highlight the importance of the collaboration between the various entities involved in this project. It is through their joint efforts that this vital support is being provided, and appropriate solutions have been identified to address the needs of the basilica. As a Government, we recognize our responsibility to preserve historical landmarks like the this, maintaining such sites in optimal condition is essential not only for the local community of Paola but also for the many visitors who come to appreciate the rich history and culture of the area.

This church holds deep symbolic importance for the southern part of Malta. It serves as a spiritual and cultural beacon for the region, and its preservation is crucial for the community. I am proud that through this project, we are able to make a significant contribution to the well-being and cultural richness of this community.

Parish priest Fr. Marc Andre Camilleri has expressed his gratitude and welcomed this government investment with great positivity. He acknowledges the importance of preserving the basilica for future generations and is pleased that this project will not only restore the building but also enhance its role as a community and cultural landmark.

I thank him for his hard work and determination.

This restoration effort is a vital move to protect and preserve Malta's cultural heritage, ensuring that its historic sites and traditions endure for future generations.

Għanja tal-Poplu 2024

L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2024 is set to take place on Saturday, August 3rd in Pjazza Teatru Rjal, and it promises to be a captivating evening with the Malta Concert Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Joe Brown.

This year saw the submission of 120 songs, from which 16 finalists were carefully selected.

I would like to express warm wishes for the finalists, and would like to commend the immense effort and creativity displayed by the singers, composers, and writers involved. L-Għanja tal-Poplu is one of the most long lasting and prestigious platforms for Maltese-language music, playing a vital role in shaping and promoting the island’s rich musical culture.

It is very important to continue supporting such initiatives, which are instrumental in safeguarding and celebrating the Maltese language and identity through music. I am eager to see which song, through its creativity and powerful message, will capture the hearts of both the jury and the public, ultimately being crowned L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2024.
