Prime Minister Robert Abela said Friday that MP Randolph Debattista will resign from Parliament to become Malta's ambassador to Geneva.
Debattista was co-opted to Parliament in March 2022 in spite of not contesting the election of that same year. His departure from Parliament would require Labour to co-opt a replacement.
He was also Labour's CEO until this week when he announced his resignation, one in a string of resignations the Labour government and party has had to face in the past weeks.
"Everyone's role is valued, and anyone who can contribute to the country will be utilised. My job is to unite and not push people away," Abela said after an extraordinary general meeting on Friday, during which delegates voted to allow MPs and MEPs to contest for the post of deputy leader for party affairs.
Abela was also asked about the return of Rosianne Cutajar as part of the parliamentary group, in spite of not giving the apology that Abela said he expected of her.
Abela said he had spoken to her before Friday's parliamentary group meeting, and she had made declarations which were to his satisfaction.
Speaking on the statutory changes, Abela said a party needs to continue to renew itself in order to remain relevant, and only in that way can it aspire to ignite change in the country.
