Edward Johnston, the man who was shot dead by police on Monday after he allegedly killed his ex-partner, used fake profiles on social media to harass Nicolette Ghirxi, The Times of Malta reports.

The newspaper was quoting Ghirxi's family members. 48-year-old Nicolette Ghirxi was allegedly killed by her former partner in her own apartment in Swatar, Birkirkara. Johnston was killed by police when he pointed a replica gun at them.

The newspaper quotes family members as saying that Johnston ran social media accounts posing as other persons to target Ghirxi, and even tried to have her removed from her job at HSBC.

It began months after their relationship had ended in December.

Family members told the Times of Malta that Johnston had told Ghirxi that he was the same man who had been jailed over a restaurant bomb threat back in 2012, in Glasgow. The newspaper said that authorities are still trying to confirm if it is the same Johnston or not.
