TMIS Editorial: The appointment of an ambassador and the PL’s moving parts

Monday, 12 August 2024, 09:46 Last update: about 28 days ago

One of the latest pieces of news regarding the moving pieces within the Labour Party structures was the resignation of PL MP Randolph De Battista from the post of Labour Party CEO.

His resignation is one of a number of moving parts within the party at the moment. The Labour party’s communication’s officer also announced his resignation. Both Labour Party Deputy Leaders will not be staying on in their roles, Daniel Micallef having announced his resignation following the MEP elections and Chris Fearne after the court found enough prima facie evidence for the case against him to continue with regards to the hospitals’ fraud case.

But after De Battista resigned as Labour Party CEO, the news quickly emerged that he was to be given a public post as an ambassador.

The announcement has been slammed by both the Nationalist Party and Repubblika.

The PN said that that the appointment of De Battista as an ambassador "is another case of how Robert Abela, because he is sinking, is ready to throw away the interest of our country to try deal with the internal troubles in his party." It went on to say that "this appointment is a blow to many people in diplomacy, who are qualified, and who can occupy these very delicate positions.”

Repubblika, meanwhile, said: “Prime Minister, Dr. De Battista, an ambassador represents the country, not the Labour Party. An ambassador is paid by us, not by the contractors who finance the Labour Party. An ambassador should be appointed based on their competence, not to avoid creating trouble for the Labour Party. What you are telling our children is that they should not strive and develop their skills. The important thing is to be at the heart of the clique. You should be ashamed of yourselves."

The people deserve answers. Why was De Battista chosen for the post over others? It is clearly part of some deal the Prime Minister struck. What exactly makes De Battista qualified to take up this post? The Prime Minister should tell the Maltese people as, right now, the message seen to be sent by our Prime Minister is that it is who you know that matters.

An Ambassador is a public post, paid for by the taxpayers money. The people deserve an explanation as to why De Battista was chosen over others.

Public jobs cannot be treated as gifts or as consolation prizes.

Meanwhile the internal moves within the Labour Party continue. Controversially, Rosianne Cutajar has been welcomed back into the PL. Abela had last said that she would only be welcomed back if she apologised. Abela, asked about her return, said: "She spoke with me clearly before the parliamentary group meeting, she made those declarations, and I was satisfied with what she said and addressed what I had spoken about earlier.”

Let’s not forget the Jason Micallef situation, where he opted not to contest for the post of PL Deputy Leader just days after announcing he would – an idea that Abela wasn’t pleased about. But then, soon after, he was given another post within the Labour Party.

Trying to keep up with all that is going on within the PL at the moment is confusing for anyone, but right now the party does not look stable.
