Unfinished St Julian’s garden, surrounding area become dumping ground

Saturday, 31 August 2024, 12:28 Last update: about 12 days ago

An unfinished garden in St Julian’s and the surrounding area have become easy prey for people who want to dispose of their unwanted rubbish.

The garden, in Henry Calleja Street, and the area beneath the Regional Road bridge have been turned into a dumping ground in the past weeks and months.

Work on the regeneration of the garden started nearly three years ago – under a different local council administration and mayor – and is still to be completed, much to the distress of the residents in the area, who have been deprived of some open space for recreation since November 2021.

The work on the garden has come in fits and starts, with workers appearing to do something for a few days, only to then disappear for weeks on end.

It is not known when the work will be completed, with residents remarking that bigger projects have been finished in much less time.

In the meantime, the perimeter around the fenced garden and the area beneath the bridge have become a dumping ground, with accumulating rubbish also ending up being an obstacle for people walking on the pavement.
