Speaker Anġlu Farrugia this afternoon addressed attendees at the conference organised by the Malta Model United Nations Society, in which a simulation of the United Nations working bodies takes place during various sessions.
The conference was held over the weekend in the Maltese Parliament, a statement issued by the office of the Speaker said Sunday. The conference focused on global resolve on how to chart a path to stability.
Mr Speaker remarked that the global response to disparities between nations, regional instability, and global challenges is the creation of multilateral institutions. He acknowledged that while there is a sense of frustration about the role of multilateral institutions, over the years, such institutions have shown their resolve and, to date, they are the best tools that states use to try and keep peace and stability.
Speaker Farrugia stressed that our response to multilateral institutions is not to abandon them but to work more, contribute more, and improve them. He mentioned Malta as an example in which, throughout the years, it has contributed to these institutions even though it is one of the smallest states in the world.
In his concluding remarks, Speaker Farrugia stated the importance that national parliaments have in international institutions. He pointed out that the role of parliamentary diplomacy is crucial, and its importance to work towards keeping peace and stability should not be overlooked.
