The rights of LGBTIQ+ persons were celebrated at the third edition of Gozo Pride, organized by LGBTI+ Gozo.

A government statement issued by the Ministry for Gozo and the Secretariat for Equality and Reforms read that the Pride March in Victoria, Gozo symbolizes the 'sometimes-difficult' journey this community had to undertake to overcome prejudices and achieve respect and their rights.

Throughout Saturday various activities took place in the gardens of Villa Rundle, where awareness was raised, and details were provided about psycho-social services and other specialized services for LGBTIQ+ people and their families.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said that the Pride March is a celebration of love, diversity, equality, and human rights.

He said that in recent years, there have been significant achievements in this sector, but unfortunately, obstacles still exist.

While providing a historical overview of the rights the LGBTIQ+ community has achieved in Malta, Camilleri emphasized the importance of continuing the journey towards greater equality.

"The Pride March is a celebration, but more than that, it is a show of unity and solidarity with every person who belongs to this community, especially those who still face discrimination or remain marginalized," Camilleri said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg said that Malta has made great strides forward, so that today, the country has the best laws in Europe protecting the civil rights of the LGBTIQ+ community.

She said, however, that there is still much more work to be done to continue changing mentalities and combating misinformation.

Buttigieg said that this year, another important step was taken for the community as, in agreement with the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS), a psycho-social service began to be provided for individuals and their families, also through outreach services in Gozo.

At the end of the march, speeches were also made by Antonella Bugeja on behalf of LGBTI+ Gozo and Jackie Roberts on behalf of Checkpoint, which provides various support services to LGBTIQ+ individuals.
