The Commissioner for Animal Welfare in Malta, Alison Bezzina said Tuesday she welcomes the announcement that the European Commission will give due importance to animal welfare and included it in the title of one of the main portfolios.

This significant development reflects a growing recognition of the importance of animal protection in society, aligning with the demands of EU citizens and the collective voice of over 310,000 individuals and more than 200 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Bezzina said in a statement.

"The inclusion of animal welfare in the Commissioner's title is not merely a symbolic victory; it underscores the urgent need for a dedicated approach to this vital issue. This moment has been preceded by a long battle led by passionate supporters, activists, and MEPs who have tirelessly advocated for stronger protections for animals. Their commitment and determination have been instrumental in bringing this crucial matter to the forefront of the EU agenda," explained Bezzina.

Prioritising animal welfare is essential for fostering a compassionate society. This role will facilitate a more integrated approach to public health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare, ensuring that these interconnected areas are addressed holistically.

With the appointment of the new Commissioner, there is anticipation for a critical review of outdated EU animal welfare legislation, which is long overdue, Bezzina said. Collaborative efforts between the Commissioner for Animal Welfare and other key figures within the Commission, including those responsible for Agriculture, Fisheries, Trade, and Environment, will be pivotal in advancing high welfare standards across all relevant sectors.
