The Partit Nazzjonalista on Friday urged the Government to clarify the next steps with regard to KM Malta Airlines. Although a statement has already been issued regarding the transfer of a third of the airline to the private sector, the public needs to be informed transparently about the future plans, the PN, thhrough MP Mario de Marco, said.
Instead of the lack of communication seen so far, the Government should provide clear guidelines on how this privatisation will take place, the process that will be followed, and the timeline the public can expect. The PN said it believes that the process should be open and inclusive, and that workers and the general public should be consulted and involved in this process.
The nationalisation and privatisation of airlines have a huge impact on the economy and employment, therefore the Partit Nazzjonalista is calling for great responsibility in how the Government addresses this issue. It is important for the nation to be clearly informed that the national interest will be protected and that this move will not lead to further economic uncertainty or job losses.
In this context, the PN invites the Government to inform the public about:
- The exact plan for how the privatisation will be carried out
- The timeline for submissions and the selection of private investors
- The steps necessary to safeguard the long-term sustainability of KM Malta Airlines
- How jobs and the future of airline workers will be protected.
If there is transparency and accountability, the PN said it believes that this process can be beneficial to the Maltese economy, but this can only be achieved if the public is fully and regularly involved and informed.
