I believe passionately in the vision of a "quality country". But what does that mean in practice, and how do we get there? For me, a quality country is one where people feel empowered to live fulfilling, balanced lives, where they can pursue personal and professional growth, and where the infrastructure and resources around them support their well-being. In this regard, the recent budgetary measure to reduce income tax is a crucial step in the right direction. Lower taxes allow citizens to retain more of their hard-earned income, enabling them to invest in their own lives and their families. But it's not just about personal finances -it's also about how we build and sustain a thriving, connected society with accessible infrastructure and community spaces.

The reduction in income tax is more than just an economic adjustment; it's a social and moral commitment to improving the quality of life of all. With more disposable income, families can afford better education, healthcare and leisure activities, enhancing their overall well-being. Small business owners will also benefit, allowing them to reinvest in their ventures, which helps stimulate the economy from the ground up. This approach aligns with a holistic vision for our country - a place where economic stability and individual prosperity go hand in hand.

Income tax cuts, however, are just one side of the coin. True progress also depends on how we use our resources to create a supportive environment. As we look to the future, the government is committed to fostering community development through significant investments in infrastructure and open spaces. Currently, through the commitment of the Public Works Department, we are driving forward 15 key projects focused on developing open spaces. With a direct investment of €22m, these projects aim to add 35,000 sq.m. of new community spaces by the end of next year.

Accessible open spaces aren't just "nice to have", they are essential for a healthy and connected society. Parks and gardens provide residents with a place to unwind, engage with neighbours and exercise - all factors that contribute to physical and mental well-being. Studies show that proximity to green spaces can lower stress, improve mental health and even boost productivity. These open spaces are particularly valuable in urban areas, where residents may have limited access to natural environments.

By investing in public infrastructure and community spaces, we're creating a foundation for sustainable growth that respects both the needs of today and the challenges of tomorrow. In a quality country, no one should feel excluded from the spaces and services that help us flourish as individuals and as a community. It's about creating a level playing field, where everyone, from children to the elderly, can access spaces that bring people together, promote inclusivity and encourage a sense of belonging.

But the journey towards a quality country requires more than budget allocations and policies. It demands a shared commitment to change and the courage to see it through. Our citizens are counting on us, as representatives and leaders, to take these bold steps forward. We have a responsibility to make choices that benefit not only today's citizens but future generations. That means thinking beyond short-term gains and instead focusing on long-term improvements that will shape our society for years to come.

The tax reductions and investments in infrastructure and community spaces are interlinked; they're both parts of a broader strategy to build a quality country. The reduction in income tax puts more money in people's pockets, empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives. At the same time, investments in public infrastructure provide our communities with accessible, high-quality spaces that promote unity and well-being.

In conclusion, this budget measure is a defining step on our journey towards a quality country. By lowering taxes and committing to community-focused projects, we're building a society that values well-being, inclusivity and opportunity for all. It's up to us to make sure these initiatives do not remain on paper but are brought to life in ways that genuinely benefit our communities. Together, we can build a quality country - a place where everyone can thrive, connect and contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future.
