The invisible made visible: Sandrina’s Angels

Marie Benoît Saturday, 7 December 2024, 08:05 Last update: about 7 months ago

Angels, represented in human form, with wings are spiritual beings that are believed to act as helpers, agents or messengers of God in the world's religions. Theologians believe that there are nine orders of angels which exist in a hierarchy... angels, archangels ... cherubins, seraphins and so on.

Fra  Filippo  Lippi's Madonna and Child which dates back to the 15th Century is famous to this day. The artwork features a realistic Mary, playful angels, and a natural landscape.  Many classical paintings which we admire mostly in museums show different kinds of angels. Of course there are fallen angels too but they are rarely painted. The presence of angels in a home is a very good thing. It is a very comforting idea that there are angels watching over us.

Sandrina Darmanin, Richard England's daughter, has art in her DNA. Angels are not new to her. She studied iconography under authorised instructors and has painted angels before. Her latest solo exhibition is Angel Drawings: "I thought I Heard An Angel Singing."  At the launch the audience was made up of art enthusiasts, artists, admirers of Sandrina's work, family and friends. It was full house. The variety of delightful angel paintings hanging on the wall were much admired.

Sandrina Darmanin's exhibition is being held at the Visitors Centre, 9 Church Street, Mosta, right side of the Dome as you face it, upstairs. Please note that there is a lift. Opening hours are from 8am to 8pm. The exhibition is open until 4 January 2025.
