EU must take a holistic and united approach in response to the developing situation in Syria - PN

The Nationalist Party said that it is attentively following recent developments in Syria, particularly the fall of Damascus into the hands of rebel forces and reports that President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country. This marks a historic shift that could signal the end of decades of authoritarian rule but may also exacerbate uncertainty and instability in the Middle East region, it said.

"Instability in the region could continue to have significant effects on international security and trigger an increase in migration toward Europe. Due to its geographic position, Malta is among the European countries most affected by these challenges. Therefore, the PN calls on the European Union to take a holistic and united approach to this situation, including enhancing border security and providing humanitarian assistance."

"The PN insists on safeguarding Malta's national interests while remaining committed to ensuring that the country upholds its humanitarian responsibilities. We encourage the adoption of measures that balance security needs with providing aid to those fleeing the conflict, ensuring that Malta remains a supportive and resilient nation in the face of these regional challenges."
