This winter, the historic Xara Palace in Mdina will host Seven Zero, an intimate and vibrant solo exhibition showcasing the illustrative and semi-abstract acrylic works of Patrick Galea. Running from 6 December to 5 January, the exhibition presents a curated selection of 15 paintings created over the past two years, offering visitors a vivid exploration of colour, form and landscape.
Renowned for their bold use of colour, Galea's works are distinguished by a palette dominated by primary hues. These bright, expressive colours form the artist's unmistakable signature, lending each piece a dynamic, radiant energy. The exhibition reflects the artist's main focus on landscapes, where reductionism and minimalism bring forth the essence of the Maltese countryside.

The artist explains: "My landscapes aim to exude an endemic and radiating warmth that seems to emanate from deep within the geology and topography of the Maltese landscape, complemented by the untainted celestial blue of the Mediterranean sky." Each painting in Seven Zero captures the spirit of the land, evoking a connection between natural beauty and the viewer's inner world.

Galea's artistic foundation was laid during formative years studying under renowned Maltese artists Antoine Camilleri and Esprit Barthet at the Lyceum between 1966 and 1972. Further studies in Architecture and Design at Jacob Kramer College and Leeds Metropolitan University (1973-1977) expanded their perspective, fostering an architectural sense of form and space. Notably, the tutorship of British artist Frank Lisle, who once mentored David Hockney, deepened the artist's understanding of volume, light and colour.

"Having Lisle as a common denominator explains my great admiration for David Hockney's work and genius," the artist reflects, drawing a line from their own vibrant, reductive style to the broader tradition of modern British art.
Through a collection limited to 15 works, due to the venue's intimate size, visitors will experience a diverse yet cohesive exploration of Malta's natural beauty. Each painting embodies the artist's belief in the "self-perpetuating miracle" of nature, inviting viewers to see familiar landscapes through fresh eyes.
Seven Zero promises a journey of colour and emotion, blending local landscapes with a global artistic dialogue. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a casual visitor, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience the vibrancy of Maltese art and culture.
