The Maltese public this weekend was given free entry to the Malta International Contemporary Arts Space (MICAS) where various activities such as live music and exhibitions were held.

Between 7 and 8 December, the public had the opportunity to visit the recently inaugurated MICAS, with free entry, where the exhibition of Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos could also be seen amongst other activities. Following the Open weekend the Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici expressed his satisfaction with the turnout to a "unique institution" which "integrated the old fortifications" with the goal of bringing well-known contemporary art from around the world to Malta and starting international cultural dialogues.

"Beyond doubt, this ambitious project costing €30 million from European funds not only was a fulfilled electoral promise but also, a symbol of the way art can continue bringing society together," Bonnici said. He added that the MICAS serves as a platform for Maltese and international artists to showcase their talent whilst strengthening cultural tourism to Malta.

On her part, MICAS CEO Phyllis Muscat noted that the Open Weekend gave the Maltese public to experience a new Maltese cultural destination which returned a previously inaccessible part of the fortifications to the community for its enjoyment.
