TMID Editorial: Generosity and year-round support

Monday, 30 December 2024, 10:37 Last update: about 5 months ago

€5.2 million was raised during this year's edition of the L-Istrina telethon.

The amount was similar, although slightly less, to the amount raised during the 2023 edition. Regardless, the Maltese and Gozitan people, as well as residents from other countries who live in Malta, showed the big hearts they have and how people can come together for the common good.

Supporting those going through difficult situations is honourable, and it is the right thing to do. We can all fall on hard times, no matter if right now we are doing well. Illness can strike at a moment's notice, and the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, and all its employees work tirelessly to try and aid those who are suffering.

In a message addressed to everyone who donated during L-Istrina, the President stated that throughout this year's edition she continued to see that "the Malta Community Chest Fund has a lot of arms which are there so that hand in hand we can give support to those in need." The President expressed her confidence in the people and in the big hearts of all Maltese and Gozitan citizens. And the people in Malta and Gozo did not disappoint.

But, of course, there is more that each and every one of us can do. First of all, it is worth noting that another telethon will soon take place, one in aid of the Dar tal‑Providenza on 1 January, another noble cause that needs our support.

There are also people who organise activities, or undertake extraordinary feats to raise funds for organisations that are there to help others. As a recent example, The SevenxSeven campaign came to a close as 29-year old Luca Zarb crossed the finish line at Golden Bay, completing his seventh marathon in seven days, raising funds for Hospice Malta.

Many other athletes over the years have performed significant feats to raise funds for good causes, and they must all be applauded.

This is not to say that one needs to undertake such a challenge to do good, not at all. Supporting good causes can come in many forms, such as by offering up time as a volunteer to help out, or donating food when an organisation needs it.

While at this time of year generosity is abundant, we must not forget organisations still need support year-round, so donating time or funds to an organisation in March for example would be helpful also.

Supporting those going through a hard time, helping those in need pull out of difficult situations is how we, as a society, can show that we care about one another and strengthen our collective values. As said, hard times can fall on anyone at a moments notice.
