Għajn Tuffieħa Tower in danger of collapse, Din l-Art Ħelwa warns as it urges for relocation

The 17th century coastal tower at Għajn Tuffieħa is in danger of collapsing due to movement in the cliff face, the NGO Din l-Art Ħelwa said in a statement on Tuesday.

The area around the tower has been hoarded off for safety reasons, with police announcing this on Monday. The Malta Police Force said on Monday that the area surrounding the tower had been closed off to the public “due to significant safety risks.”

“The structure and surrounding area are at risk of collapsing, making it dangerous to access,” the police said.

Executive President of Din l-Art Ħelwa Patrick Calleja said that "Development permission was recently given to dismantle part of the 19th century British Barracks at Fort Chambray to allow a better view for the newly proposed residential units. Surely, the Għajn Tuffieħa tower deserves to be dismantled and relocated for more serious, rational, historical and cultural reasons."

Din l-Art Ħelwa urged the government to take immediate action to have the tower dismantled and shifted to a safer location along the same promontory.
