An agreement was signed between the Lands Authority and Heritage Malta on Tuesday to expedite the urgent attention needed by the historical Qolla L-Bajda Battery in Gozo.

The Ministry for National Heritage said that a memorandum was signed between the Lands Authority and Heritage Malta to proceed with the required work to remove the structural dangers from the Qolla L-Bajda Battery in Qbajjar, Gozo.

It said that the agreement signed provides Heritage Malta with an immediate way to allocate architects with the aim of making all the necessary applications for the Planning Authority to address the current instability.

The Ministry said that the Lands Authority on its part will be publishing tenders to obtain the necessary services to carry out renovations. It said that after this phase is complete, discussions will be continued to establish all the works that must be carried out on the battery. It said that discussions between the Lands and National Heritage ministries allowed the collaboration between the Lands Authority and Heritage Malta.

The Ministry said that the battery was most likely built at the start of the 18th century and was part of a series of fortifications built by the Knights of St John only to be left to ruin by the British in the 19th century, adding that the Qolla L-Bajda Battery is the last of its kind in Gozo.
