A new research project for the prevention of colon cancer has been launched, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti stated on Friday.
Azzopardi Tanti said that this project forms part of a broad campaign of innovative initiatives, and continued that this particular initiative aims to improve the quality of life of communities as well as reduce the burden on the health system. He added that this project is being done in collaboration with the University of Malta.
The Parliamentary Secretary commented that this project is not only about science but rather is about giving people practical tools to proactively take care of their health. “Colon cancer is a serious problem, but with initiatives like this, we are contributing to changing the way we address and prevent the disease.”
The Secretariat stated that this project aims to identify the risks of colon cancer early, ahead of symptoms developing. It continued that the project also aims to reduce the need for unnecessary medical procedures and that it also aims to save precious resources in the health system which can then be directed towards those who need them.
It said that the project will focus on promoting a culture of prevention, where education and awareness will play a crucial role.
Professor Godfrey Grech, who is leading the project, said that the project is a concrete step towards a stronger and more effective system, “where research and innovation unite to prioritise prevention over cure”. He continued that the power of such initiatives is that it is not only helping those in need, “but also establishing a solid foundation for future generations to live a better and healthier life”.
"Prevention is more than an approach to health; it is a promise for a future where everyone has the chance to live a healthy life. This project not only prevents colon cancer, but also builds stronger communities,” remarked Azzopardi Tanti.
