The money being spent on leasing the MV Nikolaos ship for use by the Gozo Channel is sensitive information, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said as he was replying to a question posed by Nationalist MP Alex Borg in parliament on Tuesday.
Borg asked the Gozo Minister how much the MV NIkolaos costs, arguing that the people have a right to know how much is being spent on leasing the ship per month.
Camilleri responded by stating that he has no problem coming out with the figures, but that he has been advised by the Gozo Channel that due to an annual call for offers, revealing such information may affect the procurement process.
"I have been advised that it is sensitive information," he remarked. The Minister continued that he would need to speak with representatives from the company on the matter, and added that Borg could request permission to see the contract and expenditure himself.
Camilleri commented that the inclusion of the fourth ferry in Gozo Channel's services was important, but added that its limitations are known, and so there is a need to press forward and make use of a new fourth ferry.
Responding to an earlier question during the parliamentary session, Camilleri stated that the direction is clear, being that as soon as possible a tender needs to be issued so that an additional ship can begin being used in substitution of the MV Nikolaos.
He commented that the government has worked so that connectivity in Gozo is strengthened, and that shortcomings in the fast ferry systems have been among the issues addressed.
The Gozo Minister spoke of plans for a rural airfield in Gozo, commenting that such a project would be an important facility for the area which would provide better connectivity to Malta as well as offering potential business opportunities. Camilleri commented that some business opportunities could include pilot lessons, drone testing, as well as air sports.
