In the week before Christmas Robert Abela's Labour launched an attack on former Police Commissioner John Rizzo. As he grappled with personal tragedy Labour savagely bashed Rizzo for cheap political points. The former police commissioner's son, Kurt, himself a police officer, was suspended from the police force after testing positive for cocaine and was arrested as part of an investigation into alleged leaking of sensitive information to third parties.
John Rizzo served the country with honour for decades. His reputation for integrity and rectitude are well deserved. His son's situation must be a deep source of anguish and worry for the former police commissioner and his family. The thousands of parents who've faced the heart wrenching scourge of drug abuse in their children and its devastating consequences on their lives, know exactly the life-shattering trauma John Rizzo and his wife must be going through.
In what must feature as one of the most craven and callous examples of Labour's viciousness, Labour dug their fangs into John Rizzo. Instead of respectfully allowing justice to take its course, Labour leapt at the opportunity to torture an anguished father. Labour brutally demanded action against John Rizzo. They questioned the "deafening silence of the PN and its acolytes". ONE news asked why Jason Azzopardi and Robert Aquilina "the notary of the Archbishop's curia, found nothing to say". "On the case of Kurt Rizzo, they swallowed their tongue", ONE news commented.
Labour claimed that even Times of Malta "this morning buried this story in the middle pages". They attempted to tarnish Roberta Metsola by claiming that "Metsola specifically requests Kurt Rizzo as part of her security detail".
The Labour Party even issued a statement maliciously targeting John Rizzo. Robert Abela's Labour Party commented that since the PN and its acolytes always rush to attack government and demand resignations they should also demand John Rizzo's resignation from PN representative on the Permanent Commission against Corruption. Robert Abela wasn't happy watching John Rizzo suffer. He was intent on torturing him with humiliation too.
Kurt Rizzo is not a minor. John Rizzo is not responsible for the actions of his adult son. Kurt Rizzo should face investigation and justice as any other police officer should. But to turn on John Rizzo and launch such a vicious assault in what must be one of the darkest periods of his life reveals the depth to which Labour will stoop. Labour's actions are not only deplorable but simply revolting.
When the son of a former Labour minister was convicted of trafficking drugs at a party in Paola nobody had the gall to inflict more pain on that minister by demanding her resignation from her position. Everybody understood this was a difficult time for the whole family. When the father of the convict screamed "mafia" at the chief justice in a packed courtroom everybody felt for him and the rest of the family. Everyone understood that his outburst was a cry of a father's pain at his son's predicament. Nobody thought of exploiting such a sensitive and difficult time for the family. Most empathised with their torment.
When another Labour minister was indicted for domestic violence after allegedly beating his own son up after discovering he had been engaging in revenge porn, nobody dreamt of heaping more suffering on the minister. Everybody understood that the parent's overreaction was driven out of a father's love for his son. The whole country welcomed the minister's acquittal over those charges.
Any half decent person knows that such personal tragedies should never be exploited. The anguish of parents in such sensitive situations should never be abused for partisan political purposes.
Sadly, Robert Abela's Labour Party lacks that most basic human decency. Instead it savours the suffering of John Rizzo. It pokes his painful wound with relish. Labour uses all of its media to inflict more torture on the ailing parents, deriving pleasure from their suffering.
Why is Labour so intent on inflicting such agony on John Rizzo? Why is it so thrilled by his misery? Why torment him as he struggles with his son's difficult situation? Labour is seeking retribution. It's looking for revenge for John Rizzo's refusal to bend the knee to Labour's demands. Labour seeks to pay Rizzo back. Labour's is punishing Rizzo for doing his duty
Labour's hostility and malice sends a message to all those who dare stand up to Labour. We will wait for the opportunity and we will hit you when you are at your weakest.
This is not a one-off. Labour has shown it is relentless and merciless in its pursuit of perceived adversaries. Robert Abela's Labour attacked the father and brother of a sitting magistrate, simply for doing her job. ONE news repeatedly published photos of the magistrate in a brazen effort at intimidating her. That Robert Abela is behind this depravity is evident from his obstinate refusal to condemn those despicable tactics reminiscent of 1930s Germany. He insisted "the public has a right to be informed of who took the decisions".
Robert Abela viciously attacked another magistrate and led his media machine in a witch hunt against her in an attempt to deflect public anger over his handling of the Jean Paul Sofia tragedy onto her.
They've done the same with countless others.
Abela's Labour has now turned its guns onto Jacob Borg, the Times of Malta award-winning journalist who uncovered many of Labour's obscene scandals. ONE news is plastering images of Jacob Borg on their "news" items.
That's exactly what they did to Daphne Caruana Galizia. She was guilty of the same thing - exposing Labour's corrosive corruption. Not even her horrific death moved Labour. Her brutal assassination didn't change Robert Abela. If anything he's doubled down on his viciousness. He rigidly refused to implement any of the recommendations of the Caruana Galizia inquiry but also maliciously disparaged the members of the board.
Abela even exploited the tragic death of Karl Gouder, making unsubstantiated and damaging claims which callously inflicted more unnecessary agony on his family.
When you're reduced to heaping cruelty on those struggling with personal tragedies, your time is truly up.
