The regeneration work on Buġibba's main square has officially begun, with government spending €10 million in one of Malta's most popular tourist and entertainment destinations.

A government statement said Thursday that this project, jointly led by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Infrastructure Malta (IM), aims to breathe new life into the square and enhance its identity for both locals and visitors.

During a press conference attended by Local Council members and representatives of the business community, Transport Minister for Transport Chris Bonett said that the last intervention in this area of Buġibba dates back more than 20 years.

"We are regenerating and improving public spaces across the country, giving them a new lease of life and making them more attractive for the Maltese, Gozitans, and tourists alike," Bonett said.

Bonett said that this project is just a few hundred meters away from another major initiative being carried out by Infrastructure Malta in the area, which is the construction of a new breakwater and ferry landing, now in its final phase.

"Government is committed to continuing investment in projects that enhance the quality of life in the country while supporting the private sector to modernize and improve what it offers, which will ultimately benefit both tourists and locals," Bonett said.

CEO of Infrastructure Malta Steve Ellul outlined the phases of the project, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026.

In addition to giving the square a completely new look, IM will also improve underground services and regenerate the roads leading to the area.

Ellul thanked all those involved in making the project a reality and emphasized that IM and the MTA are working closely to ensure that the project is completed on time while minimizing disruption for those who frequent the area.
