SensAbility scheme renewed

Saturday, 15 February 2025, 12:30 Last update: about 4 months ago

The SensAbility scheme, which is a scheme through which families are allocated funds so that they can have a multisensory room in their own home, has been renewed, the Ministry for Social and Affordable Accommodation stated.

The Ministry said that during the past four years, 64 families have made use of the scheme with an investment of around €310,000. It continued that the multisensory rooms are to be used by children or adults who are on the spectrum of autism, ADHD, and down syndrome, among others.

Minister Galdes commented that when the scheme was announced, the government had stated that the initiative was a testament to a holistic and dynamic policy that was not based on a static list that could not be modified according to the need. He continued that through this mentality, the government takes the necessary decisions which result in "making a tangible difference in the lives of every citizen without making any distinction between one person or another". He added that this is the case because the government believes in the dignity of every person, as well as promoting the abilities of the individual.

Galdes said that this scheme allocates nothing less than €6,000, with the aid not being based on a means test or on the financial income of the family concerned.

He stated that he spoke with parents and relatives of beneficiaries who benefited from the scheme, and continued that they shared what a difference the multisensory rooms in their own homes have made while continuing to strengthen the abilities of the beneficiaries. "This is precisely the main objective of this scheme: we are prioritizing the interest of these beneficiaries in order to ensure that they live in a dignified environment, according to their personal needs," he said.

The CEO of the Housing Authority, Matthew Zerafa, said that the Housing Authority is putting the realities and aspirations of the families it serves at the centre of all its operations through its customer-centric approach.
