In recent days, work has begun on Triq Sciortino in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, in the heart of the locality, to transform the area into a new open, pedestrian-friendly space for residents.
In collaboration with the Department of Public Works and the Ħaż-Żebbuġ Local Council, the first phase of the project involves the demolition of the roof of an old public convenience, which will be replaced by a reservoir with a capacity of around 200,000 cubic meters of water, to be used for irrigation and maintaining the cleanliness of the area.
During a visit by the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia, accompanied by Mayor Steve Zammit Lupi, it was observed that a new piazza is being created in the area where residents can socialize and where various cultural activities will take place.
"In recent months, the Department of Public Works has intensified its efforts on projects for open and pedestrian spaces in urban areas, with the primary goal of improving the quality of life for residents in the heart of our localities," explained Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia.
The parliamentary secretary also reminded that: "Just under a year ago, through an agreement between the Department of Public Works and 54 local councils, we aimed to give back the centres of our localities to residents by creating open and green spaces."
Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia concluded by saying that this project is another testament to the strong synergy between the government, through the Department of Public Works, and the local councils.
Mayor of Ħaż-Żebbuġ Steve Zammit Lupi, praised the collaboration between the local council and the Department of Public Works, which will result in another important project for the residents in the heart of Ħaż-Żebbuġ.
