It's been another productive month as we continue to build on our commitment to sustainable development, better energy infrastructure, and stronger community well-being. In February, we made notable progress on several fronts, proving once again that by working together and staying focused, we can overcome challenges and move confidently forward.

We began the month on a positive note with our announcement regarding Malta's sustainable development goals. I am proud to share that Malta has climbed three places in the European ranking, now standing at 24th out of 34 countries. This improvement is a clear signal of our dedication to sustainable development, even as we acknowledge that challenges remain; challenges that we are addressing with targeted policies, investments, and initiatives across all Government sectors.

Our commitment to strengthening our energy infrastructure continued with further upgrades to our electrical distribution network. This month, we announced that over 30 kilometres of new underground cables have already been installed as part of Enemalta's ambitious 60-kilometre cable project across Malta and Gozo. These new cables are already in place in key localities including Tarxien, Mellieħa, Gżira, and Birkirkara, ensuring that our power supply is more resilient and efficient.

I had the opportunity to visit Attard recently, where 3.6 kilometres of new cables are being laid to upgrade the local electrical system. These cables will enhance connectivity in the area and improve the flexibility and reliability of our electrical grid. In addition, work is ongoing in a number of substations, further strengthening the distribution system in the locality. This investment is part of our ongoing commitment to modernise our technology and provide a secure, efficient electricity supply to support both families and businesses across the islands.

In Birżebbuġa, a seaside town experiencing significant growth and a vibrant commercial presence, 2.6 kilometres of new cables are being laid in full consultation with the local council. A new link has also been created between the distribution centre at the Freeport and the Birżebbuġa substations, which increases the network's flexibility and resilience. Same in Ta' Xbiex, where another 2 kilometres of cables have been placed this week. Such upgrades not only improve energy security but also ensure that our communities receive a reliable service, no matter the circumstances.

Meanwhile, through a memorandum of understanding between ARMS and the Housing Authority, we are ensuring a significant step forward towards gathering comprehensive data on the property sector. By sharing information and research, we will be better equipped to shape policies that drive fairer and more sustainable housing initiatives. This collaboration will also help us use energy consumption as a benchmark for developing new measures and incentives, ensuring that our housing policies are both practical and forward-thinking.

A major highlight this month was the completion of the Chadwick Lakes project, which saw an investment of €3 million. Following severe storm damage that had weakened the basin walls and damaged part of the side road, the project focused on reinforcing the basin and reconstructing the sides of the basin. A newly built road now spans the entire length of Chadwick Lakes, benefiting local farmers and providing families with a safer way to enjoy the natural beauty of the valley. This project is a first in such a sensitive ecological area, as it not only restores the largest water catchment on our islands but also creates a new space for community enjoyment. In a related effort to make these natural spaces more accessible, we recently unveiled a 2-kilometre walking trail at Chadwick Lakes. The trail, which stretches from Mtarfa to Fiddien, offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and modern restoration. It includes a dedicated play area for children and invites residents to explore an area where ancient water catchments meet contemporary ecological innovation. This project is a shining example of our commitment to enhancing public spaces and protecting our natural heritage for future generations. This month, Kacey Sciberras Garden was also completed; creating a new 2,700-square-meter space for St. Paul's Bay and commemorating a beloved member of this community.

In the area of education and sustainability, the first edition of the Football for the Goals initiative was concluded successfully this month. This unique project, developed in collaboration with the Inhobb il-Futbol Foundation, uses the popular sport of football to raise awareness about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals among schoolchildren. By encouraging students to act as ambassadors of sustainability, the initiative helps empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle global issues like climate change and social inequality. Football's widespread appeal makes it the ideal platform for promoting sustainable practices both in and out of the classroom.

On the international stage, I had the honour of participating during the twelfth edition of the World Governments Summit in Dubai, where the theme was 'Shaping Future Governments.' For the next two years, I was appointed Chairperson of the Global Council on Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. It is a privilege for Malta to take on a leadership role in promoting clean energy policies. Our approach in Malta -- focusing on both cleaner energy and ensuring that it remains affordable -- is being acknowledged worldwide. This role aligns with the United Nations' efforts and reinforces our commitment to pushing for energy policies that benefit everyone. I look forward to working closely with other global leaders to share ideas and drive progress on this vital issue.

February has been a month of clear, positive progress. From boosting our sustainable development ranking and upgrading our electrical infrastructure to enhancing public spaces and advancing international cooperation on clean energy, our work continues to make a real difference. These achievements reflect strong commitment to building a better future for all, while also addressing the challenges that lie ahead with practical, focused solutions.

I remain confident that with continued teamwork, innovation, and determination, we can continue building on these successes. I encourage everyone to stay engaged and look forward to the exciting projects and improvements ahead.
