'In a world of bullies deepening cooperation in the EU is imperative' - ADPD

European Union governments should coordinate more closely in the international diplomatic field and also, where necessary in defence, ADPD-the Green Party spokespersons said.

"It is more than obvious that in a world where international law depends exclusively on trust and hope that strong countries respect other countries and accept and follow the Charter of the United Nations, Malta should insist, especially with our partners in the European Union, that there be more diplomatic efforts, even in areas such as defence, so that our common values in international relations are coordinated better. Countries like Ireland, a neutral country, still insist on values such as multilateralism, support Palestine and advocate strongly for the inalienable rights of Palestinians under a cruel occupation, and even for the right of Ukraine to defend itself from an invasion. A right enshrined in the United Nations Charter", ADPD-The Green Party Secretary General Dr Ralph Cassar said.

"Let us remember that Malta's neutrality, on paper, is supposed to be guaranteed by Italy, France, Algeria and Libya. The notion so some 'absolute neutrality' is false. Not to mention that this 'guarantee' is not worth the paper it is written on today. Let us also remember that EU treaties include the defence of a member states by other member states in case of need. All this highlights the importance of an in-depth discussion on these important themes. Manoeuvring by the United States and Russia have made a victim out of Ukraine. Additionally despite security guarantees from several European countries, Ukraine was left alone to face the might of Putin's Russia. A dictator, who even sees his own compatriots as disposable. Therefore, it is important to knock our heads together and discuss our Maltese position, because history shows us that the interests of the US and Russia are not the same as ours, nor those of our fellow countries in the European Union," said ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci.

"Malta's diplomatic attempts at the United Nations and the OSCE are positive. But we would like to see more emphasis on Palestine in coordination with other EU countries who share our same values on Israel's apartheid, especially in light of the immoral abdication and abandonment of Palestinians by countries such as Germany, Italy and France, and also in light of the disgusting and sickening manoeuvres of the US and of the Trump administration. Even Palestinians have the right to defend themselves from occupation, a right enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. We also support attempts to hold a summit on Ukraine, but only if this is not yet another attempt at the colonial partition of Ukraine. We do not want a repetition of the partition of Poland between the Stalinist Soviet Union and Nazi Germany at the beginning of World War II. Any talks should be multilateral, involving the European Union, the OSCE and the United Nations."
