Transport Minister Chris Bonett presented a series of measures aimed at mitigating the country’s traffic challenges during a meeting with the Maltese Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) on Friday, with the full plan set to be unveiled publicly in the coming week.
In a statement, government said that Bonett and Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul said that this meeting marked the conclusion of a process addressing the sector in its entirety.
The process involved discussions with experts and social partners, as well as extensive public consultation.
Bonett thanked all who participated and submitted their proposals, saying that these consultations were crucial in successfully shaping measures that meet the needs and aspirations of the Maltese people.
He said that following public input, which amounted to over a thousand proposals, each suggestion was analysed and considered to formulate the final measures.
Ellul spoke of his satisfaction that social partners continue to be consulted and heard on economic and social matters.
He said that transport is a sector that significantly impacts people's quality of life, making it essential for MCESD partners to provide their recommendations on the issue.
Ellul said that past consultations with social partners have led to major national achievements, such as the agreement that increased the National Minimum Wage and legislative changes regulating temping agencies.
He thanked social partners for their contributions in ensuring Malta and its people continue to progress.
MCESD Chairperson David Xuereb said that this council meeting was held at the request of social partners, who sought an update from the Transport Minister on the submitted proposals and the measures being implemented to tackle traffic challenges.
Xuereb said that social partners provided their expertise and recommendations in a constructive discussion before the measures are officially published and communicated to the public.
He said that this reflects the true spirit of social dialogue, an open and sincere discussion leading to concrete initiatives that benefit the public.
