The Active Ageing Centre in Valletta will now operate twice a week, starting from 27 March 2025, in response to increasing demand. The centre will be open every Monday and Thursday from 7:00 am to 3:15 pm, providing senior citizens with more opportunities to engage in educational and social activities.
The extension was announced during a visit to the centre, by Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela. He highlighted the government's commitment to supporting active communities, "Through this collaboration, the days where the elderly can attend this centre are increasing, and at the same time, it is leading to the service offered being expanded so that the elderly remain active in the community."
Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea also praised the initiative, saying, "The great interest shown by the Valletta elderly in this centre demonstrates the importance of such initiatives. Through this extension, we are continuing to strengthen the opportunities for our elderly to remain active and also find social support, while enjoying a better quality of life."
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli commended the Valletta Local Council and Active Ageing and Community Care for their collaboration. She noted that the extension would allow more seniors to remain physically and socially engaged. "Through the extension of the opening of this centre, more elderly people are being reached in order to keep themselves more physically and socially active," she added.
The Centre, located in the Valletta Local Council building, has already welcomed a significant number of seniors participating in various activities. The programme, organised by Active Ageing and Community Care in collaboration with the Valletta Local Council, aims to promote lifelong learning, raise awareness about physical and mental health, and encourage social interaction.
Also present during the visit were Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay and Dr Renzo De Gabriele, Chief Executive of Active Ageing and Community Care.
