Government is ‘using its power like a bully’, PN says

Sunday, 16 March 2025, 14:45 Last update: about 3 months ago

The PN will continue to be the voice of the people in a Parliament where the Government is "using its power like a bully, trying to intimidate those who oppose it," a PN statement on Sunday read.

"After seizing control of all institutions, tying the hands of the Courts and the Judiciary, Robert Abela is now plotting to eliminate the Opposition. But he will not succeed, because we will stand firm to the very end and will continue working tirelessly for Malta and Gozo, and for our people. These were the words of the Leader of the PN Bernard Grech this morning as he visited various PN Clubs ahead of this afternoon's Fundraising Marathon."

In a comment broadcasted on NET Television, the PN Leader stated that instead of going to Parliament to solve issues related to traffic, health, education, security, pensioners, youths, and workers, the Government is using the country's highest institution to act like a bully and try to silence everyone.

Grech noted that the PN is a "strong, compact group" in Opposition that is committed to continue serving as the "people's voice." Grech noted that the government attempted to silence PN MPs in Parliament because it wants to restrict them, rather than see them grow stronger.

Grech said that the PN intends to be the party that provides Maltese and Gozitans with a political alternative. He said that it intends to accomplish this through its proposals pertaining to amending the country's economic model, through the way it will change and strengthen sectors, and in how it will continue to provide solutions to people.

The Opposition leader said that connectivity between Malta and Gozo should be improved upon through the introduction of two more ferries to the Gozo Channel service - thus boosting the total number of ferries to five. Grech guaranteed that this measure will come to life once PN is elected to power, and that these vessels will be "clean ships."

He also called for the Mġarr Port in Gozo to be enlarged, arguing that this improved accessibility would be beneficial to the Gozitan economy and Gozitans' quality of life.

Within just four days, the Government voted against the people by rejecting measures to ease the burden of the rising cost of living felt by thousands, voted against the people by pushing forward legislation preventing citizens from requesting a magisterial inquiry against any Government member or their friends, and is now further working against the people by presenting an urgent motion to launch a fascist attack against the PN, which is fulfilling its constitutional role as the Opposition, the PN said.

"For Robert Abela and his associates, the only thing that matters is themselves. For Robert Abela, everything concerning him is urgent, while everything concerning you is left on the shelf. This is a failed Government - a Government that no longer recognises its own people, and which even Labour supporters no longer recognise."

"Now more than ever, the PN's efforts to defend the rights of the Maltese and Gozitans from a Government that does nothing but discard them are crucial. Now more than ever, the work of the PN must be strengthened. And to strengthen it, the means by which this work reaches the people must also be reinforced."
