A female nurse has suffered injuries after she was allegedly stabbed by a colleague at Mater Dei Hospital, The Malta Independent is informed.
The nurse was allegedly stabbed by another nurse, a male colleague, on Thursday evening.
The police later said that the alleged aggressor was arredted on Friday morning. The man, aged 36, is being held for questioning and will be charged in court in the coming days.
The incident happened in Mater Dei Hospital’s Day Care Ward, and the victim was rushed to the emergency department.
In a statement, the police said that the victim, a 41-year-old woman from India, was allegedly stabbed with a “pointed instrument” and suffered injuries in her hand after what the force described as an “argument.”
The allegedly aggressor was confirmed to be a man who is also an Indian national, who fled the scene. He was arrested Friday morning.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, the hospital confirmed that the incident took place at around 6:45pm on Thursday. The police said that it was informed about the incident at 7:15pm.
The hospital did not give any further details about the two nurses involved, and said that the victim was given immediate medical are and is being closely monitored. The hospital did not give details about her condition.
Mater Dei Hospital said that it is cooperating fully with the police so that investigations can be done in a transparent and thorough manner.
“Mater Dei Hospital is fully committed to maintaining a safe environment which is respectful and supportive for workers, patients and visitors. As expected, there is no tolerance for violent acts, harassment, abuse, or improper behaviour within the hospital,” the hospital said.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values that we take with great seriousness in this hospital,” it added.
Mater Dei said that it is taking all the necessary action to address this situation in a proper manner.
