On Friday morning, Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the activities organised at Freedom Square, Valletta, to mark Europe Day 2025, organised by Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta (SEM).

This annual event is organised by SEM together with Europe Direct Valletta, and commemorates the historic declaration made by Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950, which laid the foundation for the European project that today includes 27 Member States, a statement said.

Abela spoke of the important role of SEM in supporting numerous organisations, including voluntary ones, to help them access European funds.

He spoke of how the largest package of EU funds ever obtained by Malta is being translated into significant benefits for society, making SEM’s mission a crucial one.

Accompanied by SEM Chief Executive Rodrick Zerafa, Abela met with various entities providing information and services on EU-related opportunities, including European funding, education, youth, employment, health, and consumer rights.

The event also featured the participation of many students from various schools.

Students from the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School presented musical numbers and choreography, while secondary and post-secondary students participating in the European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS) programme took part in a quiz about the European Union.

A dedicated space hosted an exhibition for the initiative “EU in My School,” which included the participation of six secondary schools from Malta and Gozo.

The exhibition aimed to raise awareness about EU fund investments in Malta and showcased visits to MICAS, research at the University of Malta, and the Reverse Osmosis plant at Ħondoq ir-Rummien, the statement said.

Abela presented commemorative plaques to representatives of the schools of St Edward’s College, St Francis Secondary, Malta Visual and Performing Arts School, St Ignatius College Secondary School Tal-Ħandaq, Maria Regina College Secondary School Lily of the Valley, and Gozo College Secondary School Ninu Cremona.

During the event, students and the public had the opportunity to visit various entities present, including SEM, Europe Direct Valletta, FONDI.eu, EU Careers, EUPA, Euroguidance, Creative Europe, among others.
