Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia said that today's youth know what they want and what impact they can have, and said that they are not simply participating, they are shaping the future.

In a speech during the opening of the EkoSkola 2025 session in Parliament, Farrugia praised the contribution and commitment of Maltese youth in support of the environment and intergenerational justice, a statement said.

While acknowledging that each EkoSkola session is becoming more relevant and impactful, Farrugia said this generation not only knows what it wants, but also has the tools and courage to make a concrete difference.

He referred to the document Malta's Vision for 2050, which he said aims to shape a cleaner, smarter, and fairer future for all.

In this context, the Speaker mentioned concrete steps already taken to reduce CO2 emissions sustainably, including investment in clean energy and technologies such as shore-to-ship power in the Grand Harbour.

Farrugia also spoke about systems he envisions, such as smart roads that could charge electric vehicles while in motion, the installation of solar panels on the façades of residential buildings, and harnessing underwater currents as a source of renewable energy.

He said that if 60% of vehicles in Malta are switched to electric and charged through clean sources, the country could reduce up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, equivalent to 17% of total emissions.

Farrugia said that schools should be seen as laboratories of thought, where learning inspires action, and where young people's ideas should be welcomed with seriousness and a sense of responsibility.

Referring to national policy, the Speaker appealed for greater commitment from authorities to address the genuine aspirations of a generation that wants a greener and more sustainable Malta.

"When politics listens to its children, and when youth believe that their ideas can make an impact, that is true change," Farrugia said.

The special EkoSkola 2025 session was also addressed by Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, and several MPs from both sides of the House.
