Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri has said that throughout the year 2024, the police received 2,225 reports of domestic violence. This equates to around six reports everyday.

He was responding to a question asked by PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia.

The Minister for Home Affairs revealed this information in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon. This marks a 7% increase to 2023 - 154 less cases were recorded that year, for a total of 2,071 cases.

According to the Annual Crime Review for last year, which Minister Camilleri made reference to, domestic violence cases continue to be on the rise. The annual report states that reports of domestic violence have been increasing year-after-year since 2007.

The report says that amongst the 2,225 cases received by police last year, around four in every five cases (78%) relate to psychological harm. Domestic violence via grievous bodily harm with physical force has also increased, while other sub-categories of domestic violence either declined or experienced no change in numbers.

Since the first full year that these reports were statistically recorded for future reference, i.e., 2008, Malta has witnessed a near fourfold increase in the number of domestic violence cases reported to the police. In comparison, 2008 registered just 450 total reports of this kind; this equates to a 494% spike in domestic violence reports between 2008 and 2024.

Over the past decade (2014-2024), the incidence of these reports has increased by 112%; 1,177 less cases were reported to the police in 2014.
