Team Blue Lagoon has expanded the designated swimming zone of the Blue Lagoon, extending the main central area while adding two nearby inlets, now exclusively reserved for swimmers as well, the Malta Tourism Authority said Saturday.
This expansion, coupled with improved management of maritime operations, provides swimmers with safer and more enjoyable access to the Blue Lagoon's iconic crystal-clear waters, ahead of summer 2025, the MTA said. These developments form part of a broader strategy to improve environmental sustainability at the Blue Lagoon, while protecting its delicate Natura 2000 ecosystems and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
The original swimming zone has been increased by 12%. Two smaller beaches located to the left of the jetty have been newly designated as safe swimming zones. Previously, these inlets could be accessed by smaller boats and other watercraft, including jet skis. Now cordoned off, they are offering a safer setting for swimmers. Team Blue Lagoon also strengthened the management of vessel traffic and berthing activities, as applicable for such high-traffic maritime zones, the MTA said
The swimming zone extension is one of several initiatives that Team Blue Lagoon has introduced since 1 May, as part of a two-year sustainability project. Other actions include improved waste management, additional sanitation facilities, increased enforcement and other long-term protection and rehabilitation measures.
This month, Team Blue Lagoon also doubled cleaning and waste management resources to ensure constant upkeep, with more frequent cleaning routines across the whole area. Workers are also giving special attention to removing any litter that ends up in the surrounding garigue areas. Environmental authorities and enforcement agencies are increasing patrols to help prevent littering and other violations.
On 1 May, Team Blue Lagoon also launched the Book. Protect. System, a new free, online visitor booking platform to manage visitor numbers, as another measure to protect and preserve the delicate ecosystems of this natural site. In summer 2024, up to 12,000 visitors were recorded at the Blue Lagoon at any one time, especially at peak hours. The new booking system allows a maximum of 4,000 visitors at Blue Lagoon at any one time. Booking via bluelagooncomino.mt is very easy, fast and completely free of charge.
