A new national initiative titled "From Square to Square" has been launched in Malta, aiming to transform public squares into vibrant hubs of cultural and artistic activity. This project is set to breathe new life into the heart of Maltese communities by offering a variety of cultural experiences right in their town centres.

Announced at a press conference by Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici, along with Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, the initiative will feature a series of live performances, local film screenings, interactive events, and community activities held in public squares throughout Malta and Gozo.

The primary goal of the initiative is to convert these public spaces into open-air centres for creativity and community engagement. Organisers hope to make the arts more accessible to everyone, while celebrating Maltese cultural identity and fostering greater community participation.

Minister Bonnici emphasised the importance of reinvigorating public squares, stating:

"This initiative aims to further enliven town squares across Malta and Gozo through high-quality activities organised by local councils. Traditionally the heart of social life, these squares will once again become living spaces where art and community come together to shape and strengthen our cultural identity."

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli added that this initiative is one of several currently being rolled out to support local councils. The Local Government Division will allocate around €25,000 per cultural activity to ensure their successful implementation.

"In the coming months, various local councils across Malta and Gozo will be turning their squares into spaces that celebrate culture, tradition, art, and local talent," said Zerafa Civelli. "Most importantly, this initiative will offer residents memorable experiences. It clearly shows the government's strong belief in the role of local councils as platforms for Maltese culture and community spirit."

She concluded by encouraging the public to participate, saying:

"This is an investment in local councils, in arts and culture, in craftsmanship - and above all, in the people of each locality, giving them more opportunities to enjoy their leisure time with friends and family. I urge everyone to attend the 'From Square to Square' events."

The towns and villages that will be hosting events in the coming months include Birgu, Għargħur, Gżira, Senglea, Kalkara, Marsascala, Mosta, Mtarfa, Pietà, Qormi, Qrendi, Rabat, San Lawrenz, Kerċem, and Żejtun.
