Signing of the MoU by the president of Chamber of Engineers, Dr Ing. Bonnie Attard
Malta participated in the annual seminar for the Association of Engineers and Architects of the Republic of San Marino - ArchiDays, from 29 to 31 May, in honour of its 30th anniversary since its legal recognition.
On this notable occasion, the Chamber of Engineers was honoured to be invited to the celebrations alongside fellow delegations from other European small nations, including Andorra and Liechtenstein. Malta, as the largest delegation and the only EU member state, played a key role in the discussions throughout the seminar. The Chamber was represented by its president, Dr Ing. Bonnie Attard, and International Affairs secretary, Ing. Ryan Grixti.
Each participating country had the opportunity to share insights into the evolution, challenges and achievements of the engineering and architectural professions within their respective jurisdictions. Malta's representatives offered valuable guidance on how to sustain professional growth without compromising ethics or quality. Discussions focused on professional and legal frameworks, a central concern for small states seeking to modernise while upholding high standards.
A highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between San Marino, Andorra and Malta. The MoU aims to foster collaboration among professional bodies to address shared challenges and to explore opportunities for joint initiatives such as exchange programmes and continuous professional development opportunities. The MoU was signed on behalf of the Maltese organisations by the representatives of the Chamber of Engineers and the Kamra tal-Periti. The Kamra tal-Periti was represented by Perit Andre Pizzuto (President) and Perit Matias Camilleri De Marco (Vice-President).
The seminar also welcomed several distinguished guests, including Secretary of State Matteo Ciacci, world-renowned structural engineer Maurizio Milan and Carlo Piano, journalist and son of world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. Milan and Piano captivated attendees with presentations of landmark architectural and engineering projects, highlighting both the technical complexity and creative passion behind them. Featured projects included the San Nicola Stadium in Bari, the Basilica of San Pio, the Science Museum in Trento, a hospital in Entebbe, Uganda and the Politecnico di Milano campus at Bovisa.
The event concluded with a book signing session of Milan's publication, Affinità strutturali. Una vita tra progetti e cantieri con Renzo Piano, adding a cultural and intellectual dimension to the seminar.
ArchiDays 2025 was not only a celebration of San Marino's professional achievements but also a meaningful step forward in fostering a stronger, more interconnected network of professionals across Europe's microstates.
